Unaweep Tabeguache Scenic Byway

Colorado

133.0 miles

Journey through one of Colorado’s most geologically fascinating corridors on the Unaweep Tabeguache Scenic Byway, a 133-mile adventure connecting the high desert to alpine terrain. This State Scenic Byway reveals landscapes found nowhere else on Earth, including the remarkable Unaweep Canyon—the only canyon in the world carved by two rivers flowing in opposite directions.

Beginning near Grand Junction, the route winds through dramatic red rock formations, past ancient Precambrian granite walls rising over 1,000 feet, and into the rugged Uncompahgre Plateau. Watch for wildlife including mule deer, golden eagles, and wild turkeys. The historic town of Nucla offers a glimpse into Colorado’s mining heritage, while Gateway provides stunning views where the Dolores River meets towering sandstone cliffs.

Stop at the Driggs Mansion ruins, explore Divide Road for panoramic vistas, or simply pull over to absorb the silence of this uncrowded wilderness. The byway transitions through pinyon-juniper woodlands, ponderosa pine forests, and expansive meadows.

Best time to visit: Late spring through early fall offers optimal conditions, with autumn bringing spectacular golden aspens.

Allow: 3-4 hours for the drive alone, or a full day to explore stops along the way.
