Winding through 72 miles of southwestern New Mexico’s most dramatic landscapes, the Trail of the Mountain Spirits National Scenic Byway carries travelers deep into the heart of the Gila country. This National and State Scenic Byway traces a path through the ancient Mimbres Valley, past volcanic formations, dense ponderosa pine forests, and the rugged Pinos Altos Range.

The route connects the historic mining towns of Silver City and Mimbres, passing through communities steeped in Old West heritage. Stop at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument to explore remarkably preserved 13th-century pueblo homes nestled in natural rock alcoves. The Gila National Forest offers endless hiking, hot springs, and some of the most pristine wilderness remaining in the Southwest.

Along the way, sweeping mountain vistas give way to deep canyons carved by the Gila River and its tributaries. Watch for mule deer, elk, and wild turkey in the high country meadows. The charming village of Pinos Altos, with its historic saloon and opera house, makes a perfect midway stop.

Allow three to four hours for the drive, longer if you plan to hike. Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, with golden aspens making October particularly stunning.
