Scenic Byway 143 – Utah’s Patchwork Parkway
Utah
51.0 miles
Scenic Byway 143, known as Utah‘s Patchwork Parkway, is a stunning 51-mile journey connecting Parowan to Panguitch through some of southern Utah’s most dramatic high-country landscapes. This National Scenic Byway earned its name from the colorful quilt-like patterns created by aspen groves, evergreen forests, and alpine meadows that blanket the Markagunt Plateau.
Travelers ascending from Parowan climb through Brian Head, Utah’s highest base-elevation ski resort, before reaching elevations over 10,000 feet. The route passes Cedar Breaks National Monument, a breathtaking natural amphitheater rivaling Bryce Canyon with its crimson and orange limestone formations. Panguitch Lake offers excellent fishing and peaceful waters reflecting surrounding peaks, while dense forests of spruce and fir provide habitat for deer, elk, and wild turkey.
Summer and early fall are ideal for driving this byway, when wildflowers carpet the meadows and aspen leaves transform into brilliant gold. Winter brings heavy snowfall, occasionally closing portions of the route. Allow two to three hours for the drive, though Cedar Breaks alone deserves extended exploration.
Whether you’re seeking alpine vistas, outdoor recreation, or a scenic alternative between I-15 and US 89, Patchwork Parkway delivers an unforgettable high-elevation adventure through Utah’s remarkable backcountry.
