Follow the footsteps of traders, pioneers, and adventurers along the Santa Fe Trail National Scenic Byway, a 277-mile journey through northeastern New Mexico that traces one of America’s most storied trade routes. From the high plains near the Colorado border to the sun-baked adobe streets of Santa Fe, this drive unfolds across sweeping grasslands, volcanic mesas, and the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Stop at Fort Union National Monument, where crumbling adobe walls mark the largest military post on the 19th-century frontier. Wagon ruts carved 150 years ago remain visible in the prairie, a haunting reminder of the thousands who traveled this path. The route passes through Las Vegas, New Mexico — not the Nevada one — a charming town with over 900 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Near Springer, watch for pronghorn grazing across open rangeland beneath enormous skies.

As you approach Santa Fe, piñon-covered hills frame views of the Jemez and Sandia ranges. The historic plaza awaits with galleries, chile-scented restaurants, and centuries of layered culture.
