Winding through nearly six and a half miles of rural Kentucky, the Rice, VanMeter, and Elk Chester Roads scenic byway offers a quiet escape into the rolling countryside that defines the Bluegrass State. Designated as a State Scenic Byway, this short but rewarding drive carries you past open pastureland bordered by dry-stone fences, wooded hollows thick with hickory and oak, and gentle ridgelines that frame long views of the surrounding farmland.

The route threads through a landscape that has changed little over generations. Tobacco barns and historic homesteads dot the roadside, while seasonal wildflowers paint the shoulders in color from spring through early fall. Watch for red-tailed hawks circling above the fields and white-tailed deer grazing at dawn and dusk.

At just over six miles, the drive itself takes only fifteen to twenty minutes, but allow at least an hour to pull over for photographs and soak in the views. Late spring through mid-autumn delivers the richest scenery, with October’s foliage offering a particularly striking backdrop.
