This state-designated scenic byway carves through a geological wonderland of towering sandstone cliffs, natural stone arches, and deep forested gorges shaped over millions of years.

As you drive, expect sweeping views of the Red River cutting through ancient rock formations, with more than 100 natural arches scattered throughout the surrounding wilderness. Pull over at Sky Bridge for a short walk across a stunning natural stone span, or stop at Chimney Top Rock for panoramic views that stretch across miles of unbroken forest canopy. The Nada Tunnel, a hand-carved passage through solid rock, offers one of the route’s most memorable moments.

Waterfalls cascade along roadside trails, and wildlife sightings are common — watch for white-tailed deer, red-tailed hawks, and the occasional black bear. Rock climbers flock to the world-class sandstone walls visible from several pulloffs.

Fall delivers the most spectacular drive, when hardwood forests erupt in brilliant orange and crimson. Allow two to three hours for the route, longer if you plan to hike. This is a drive worth savoring.
