New River Valley Byway
North Carolina
Wind through the ancient highlands of northwestern North Carolina along the New River Valley Byway, where one of the oldest rivers in the world has carved a landscape of breathtaking beauty. This state scenic byway follows the path of the New River as it meanders through rolling pastures, forested ridgelines, and charming small towns tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Along the route, travelers will discover sweeping valley views framed by misty peaks, historic farms with split-rail fences, and roadside pulloffs that reveal the river below — calm stretches perfect for canoeing and banks lined with ancient sycamores. Stop in the town of Todd to explore its old general store, or pull over at one of several river access points to wade into the cool, clear water.
The byway passes through some of the most unspoiled countryside in the southern Appalachians, with wildflower meadows in spring and a spectacular canopy of color each autumn. Fall foliage season, from late September through October, is the ideal time to drive it.
Allow at least half a day to enjoy the route at a leisurely pace, with time for short hikes, photo stops, and a riverside picnic along the way.
