Deer Creek Road Scenic Byway

Winding through 14.2 miles of Nevada’s rugged backcountry, Deer Creek Road reveals a landscape few travelers ever discover. This State Scenic Byway traces a path through narrow canyon corridors where towering rock walls give way to wide-open views of sagebrush valleys and distant mountain ridges. Creek-side cottonwoods provide ribbons of green against the high desert palette of rust, ochre, and dusty gold.

Watch for mule deer grazing along the creek banks in the early morning hours — the road earns its name honestly. Raptors circle overhead, and wildflowers carpet the meadows through late spring and early summer. Pull over at the canyon overlooks to take in sweeping vistas that stretch for miles across the Great Basin.

The best time to drive Deer Creek Road is May through October, when the road is reliably passable and the light paints the canyon walls in warm tones during golden hour. Allow at least an hour for the drive itself, but budget extra time for photo stops — you’ll want them.
