Cascade Loop
Washington
440.0 miles
Spanning 440 miles through Washington State, the Cascade Loop is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most spectacular driving adventures. This National Scenic Byway traces a dramatic circuit from the pastoral shores of Whidbey Island through the rugged heart of the Cascade Range, delivering an ever-changing tapestry of landscapes that will leave you breathless.
Begin your journey amid the island charm and historic seaside towns near Puget Sound, then head east through Everett toward Stevens Pass, where dense evergreen forests give way to alpine meadows and granite peaks. The route winds through North Cascades National Park—often called the “American Alps”—where glaciers cling to jagged summits and turquoise lakes shimmer in forested valleys.
Descending the eastern slopes, you’ll discover the surprising beauty of Lake Chelan, a fjord-like gem stretching 55 miles into wilderness. Continue south to Wenatchee, the apple capital of the world, where orchards blanket sun-drenched hillsides against a mountain backdrop.
Allow three to four days to fully appreciate this loop, with stops for hiking, photography, and local wineries. Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, with summer providing access to high-altitude trails and autumn painting the valleys in brilliant gold. The Cascade Loop rewards those who take their time.
