Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site
Nevada (Lincoln County)
Tucked into the remote desert landscape of Lincoln County, the Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site preserves a one-room schoolhouse that served local ranching families from 1922 until its closure in 1967. Spanning just 1.8 acres, this tiny site packs outsized historical charm — the schoolhouse still contains original desks, textbooks, a pot-bellied stove, and chalkboards that look as though the teacher stepped out moments ago.
What makes the Elgin Schoolhouse remarkable is its authenticity. Unlike many restored historic buildings, this schoolhouse was never gutted or rebuilt. The furnishings, supplies, and personal touches left behind by decades of students remain largely undisturbed, offering a genuinely intimate window into rural Nevada life during the 20th century.
Visitors can walk through the schoolhouse and examine the artifacts up close, read interpretive panels about the families who settled this stretch of high desert, and photograph the weathered building against the wide-open Nevada sky. The surrounding grounds include a few outbuildings and the kind of stark, beautiful emptiness that defines much of Lincoln County.
There are no camping facilities on-site, though dispersed camping on nearby public land is common in this part of Nevada. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for a visit — summers in Lincoln County run hot, and winter brings occasional snow at elevation.
The Elgin Schoolhouse sits well off the beaten path, making it a rewarding stop for travelers exploring US-93 or the Great Basin backcountry who appreciate history without the crowds.
