Salmon Lake State Park

Tucked into the Clearwater Valley of Missoula County, Salmon Lake State Park packs a surprising amount of Montana beauty into its compact 42 acres. The park sits along the western shore of Salmon Lake, a natural glacial lake fed by the Clearwater River, surrounded by dense conifer forest and framed by the Swan Range to the east.

The lake itself is the main draw. At roughly 3,800 feet in elevation, Salmon Lake stays warm enough for swimming through July and August while remaining cool and clear — ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Anglers come for largemouth bass, northern pike, and yellow perch, with early morning casting from shore or a small boat producing the best results. In winter, the lake freezes solid enough for ice fishing, drawing a quieter but dedicated crowd.

The shoreline day-use area offers picnic tables, a boat launch, and easy water access, making it a reliable stop for families traveling Highway 83 through the Seeley-Swan corridor. Birdwatchers should keep an eye on the marshy southern end of the lake, where osprey, great blue herons, and the occasional bald eagle hunt.

The best time to visit is late June through early September, when water temperatures peak and wildflowers fill the surrounding meadows. Spring and fall bring fewer visitors and moody skies that photographers love.
