Wakonda State Park

Tucked into the rolling hills of Lewis County in northeast Missouri, Wakonda State Park spreads across 1,054 acres of oak-hickory forest surrounding Wakonda Lake. The park takes its name from the Siouan word for “spirit” or “great power,” and the landscape earns that title — quiet coves, wooded ridgelines, and a 273-acre lake that draws anglers chasing largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie year-round.

The lake is the centerpiece here. Rent a boat from the marina or launch your own (electric motors and trolling motors only — no gas engines, which keeps the water calm and the fishing peaceful). Several trails wind through the surrounding timber, including paths that loop along the lakeshore and climb through upland forest where spring wildflowers carpet the ground in April and May.

Wakonda offers both basic and electric campsites spread across wooded loops near the water, making it a solid pick for families and weekend campers who want shade and lake access without fighting crowds. There’s also a swimming beach for cooling off in summer and picnic shelters scattered throughout the park.

The best window to visit runs from late April through October. Spring brings dogwood blooms and turkey season. Summer means swimming, fishing, and warm evenings at the campsite. Fall delivers some of northeast Missouri’s best leaf color across the hardwood canopy.

Wakonda flies under the radar compared to Missouri’s bigger-name parks, and that’s precisely its appeal — a genuine retreat without the noise.
