Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry
Missouri (Dent, Shannon County)
Spanning 60,000 acres across Dent and Shannon counties in the Missouri Ozarks, Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry offers one of the most rugged and undeveloped wilderness experiences in the state. This vast stretch of public land sits within the Mark Twain National Forest and feels genuinely remote — no paved roads, no developed campgrounds, and minimal signage. That’s exactly the point.
The backcountry is named for Roger Pryor, a local conservationist who championed protecting this landscape of steep hollows, dense hardwood forests, and spring-fed creeks. The terrain here is classic Ozark karst country: sinkholes, caves, natural springs, and rocky bluffs carved by centuries of water cutting through dolomite. The Current River — a federally designated National Scenic Riverway — borders the area and provides outstanding canoeing and kayaking.
Hikers and horseback riders share a network of unmarked old logging roads and footpaths that wind through the forest. Hunting is popular in season, particularly for deer and turkey. Dispersed primitive camping is available throughout — pack in, pack out, and bring your own water filtration.
Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit. Spring brings wildflower displays and flowing creeks after winter rains, while autumn transforms the hardwood canopy into a patchwork of gold and scarlet. Summers can be intensely hot and humid with ticks in full force.
This isn’t a place for casual day-trippers. Roger Pryor Pioneer Backcountry rewards those who come prepared for genuine solitude and self-reliance in one of Missouri’s last wild corners.
