Metamora-Hadley State Recreation Area
Michigan (Lapeer County)
Nestled in the rolling hills of Lapeer County, Metamora-Hadley State Recreation Area spreads across 723 acres of some of Michigan’s most scenic glacial terrain. The landscape here is defined by steep, wooded ridges, kettle lakes, and open meadows — a product of the last ice age that gives this corner of southeast Michigan a surprisingly rugged character.
The park’s trail system is a major draw, with paths winding through hardwood forests and across ridgelines that offer long views over the surrounding countryside. Hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders all share the network, and in winter the trails convert to solid cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes. The equestrian community is especially well-served here, with dedicated horse trails and staging areas that make this one of the more popular riding destinations in the Lower Peninsula.
Lake Minnewanna sits at the heart of the recreation area, providing a quiet spot for fishing and non-motorized boating. Anglers can expect bass and panfish, and the lakeshore makes for a peaceful afternoon with a rod and a camp chair.
For visitors looking to stay overnight, the park is worth checking with the Michigan DNR for current campsite availability and seasonal details, as facilities can vary year to year.
The best time to visit is late May through October, when the trails are dry and the fall color display across those glacial hills is outstanding. Spring wildflower season, typically mid-April through May, is another compelling reason to make the drive.
