Lakeport State Park stretches across 565 acres along the Lake Huron shoreline in St. Clair County, making it one of the few Michigan state parks offering direct access to the lake’s sandy beaches. The park’s mile-long beach is the main draw — a wide, uncrowded stretch of sand where the water stays shallow enough for families to wade comfortably well into summer.

The park is split into two units connected by a short stretch of Lakeshore Road. The northern unit holds most of the campground, with 250-plus sites spread across shaded loops of maple and oak. Many sites sit close enough to the water that you can hear the waves from your tent. The southern unit is quieter, with wooded trails and picnic areas that feel more secluded.

Hiking trails wind through hardwood forest and along the lakeshore, totaling roughly three miles — enough for a solid morning walk without being a full-day commitment. Birdwatchers will find the marshy areas between the two units productive, especially during spring and fall migration. Fishing from the shore pulls in smallmouth bass and perch, though serious anglers often launch from nearby harbors.

Summer weekends fill the campground fast, so reservations are worth making early. Late June through August brings the warmest swimming conditions, but September visitors get uncrowded beaches and fall color starting to turn in the hardwoods. Winter is quiet, with cross-country skiing possible when snow cooperates.
