Holly State Recreation Area

Spanning nearly 7,817 acres across Oakland County, Holly State Recreation Area offers a surprising stretch of rugged, hilly terrain just an hour north of Detroit. The landscape here was shaped by glaciers, leaving behind rolling hills, kettle lakes, and dense hardwood forests that feel worlds away from the metro sprawl.

The park’s trail system is a standout. Hikers and mountain bikers share over 20 miles of paths that wind through oak-hickory forests and open meadows, with enough elevation change to keep things interesting. In winter, those same trails become popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Heron Lake and Wildwood Lake anchor the park’s water recreation, offering fishing for bass, bluegill, and pike, plus quiet paddling on calm water. A swim beach at Heron Lake draws families through the summer months.

Horseback riders get dedicated trails and their own staging area, making Holly one of the more equestrian-friendly state lands in southeast Michigan. Hunting is permitted in season across much of the acreage, with whitetail deer and wild turkey drawing the most attention.

Fall is arguably the best time to visit, when the hardwoods put on a vivid color show and the summer crowds thin out. Spring wildflower season runs a close second.
