Dodge No. 4 State Park
Michigan (Oakland County)
Tucked into Oakland County just north of Waterford Township, Dodge No. 4 State Park packs a surprising amount of nature into its 139 acres. The park sits along the shores of Cass Lake, one of the largest all-sports lakes in southeastern Michigan, making it a go-to spot for boating, fishing, and swimming without the long drive up north.
The sandy beach is the main draw in summer — it stretches wide enough to absorb weekend crowds, and the shallow entry makes it a favorite for families with young kids. Cass Lake itself offers excellent fishing for walleye, bass, and panfish, with a boat launch right in the park. Kayakers and paddleboarders will find the lake’s size gives them plenty of room to explore, including a paddle out to the small islands scattered across the water.
Beyond the beach, a network of trails winds through wooded areas that feel remarkably secluded given the suburban surroundings. These paths are short but pleasant for a morning walk or an easy hike with kids. In winter, the trails see use from cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
The park does not offer overnight camping, so plan for a day trip. Summer weekends fill up fast — arrive before 11 AM to secure parking, especially on holidays. Late spring and early fall are the sweet spot: warm enough for the beach, cool enough for comfortable hiking, and far fewer crowds.
Dodge No. 4 proves you don’t need to leave metro Detroit to find quality time outdoors.
