Bay City State Park

Stretching across 2,389 acres along the shores of Saginaw Bay, Bay City State Park offers one of Michigan’s best opportunities to experience the unique ecology where freshwater wetlands meet Lake Huron. The park’s crown jewel is the Tobico Marsh, one of the largest remaining coastal wetlands on the Great Lakes — a 1,700-acre refuge that draws birders from across the Midwest to spot great blue herons, bald eagles, and more than 180 documented species throughout the year.

Two observation towers rising above the marsh canopy give visitors sweeping views of this remarkable landscape, connected by boardwalk trails that wind through cattails and sedge meadows. Beyond the marsh, the park features a sandy swimming beach on Saginaw Bay, several miles of hiking and nature trails, and picnic areas shaded by mature hardwoods.

The park’s campground provides a solid base for exploring the region, with sites suited for both tent and RV camping. The Saginaw Bay Visitor Center hosts interpretive programs and exhibits on the area’s natural history, making it a worthwhile first stop.

Summer brings warm swimming conditions and peak birding activity, while fall migration turns Tobico Marsh into a staging ground for waterfowl. Winter visitors can cross-country ski the trails and catch a quieter side of the park entirely.

Bay City State Park sits just north of the city of Bay City, making it an easy day trip or a weekend destination for anyone exploring Michigan’s eastern shoreline.
