About This Park
This recreation area is part of Cordell Hull Lake
Tucked into the southwestern corner of Massachusetts where Hampden County meets the Connecticut border, Granville State Forest sprawls across 2,432 acres of rugged, wooded terrain that feels a world away from the suburban sprawl of the Pioneer Valley. This is deep New England forest — hemlock ravines, rocky streams, and ridgelines thick with oak and birch that put on a spectacular show each October.
The forest’s crown jewel is Hubbard River Gorge, where water has carved a dramatic ravine through ancient rock, creating cascading falls and swimming holes that draw hikers year-round. The gorge trail is moderately challenging, weaving along the river with enough elevation change to feel like a real adventure without requiring technical skills. Beyond the gorge, miles of unpaved roads and footpaths wind through the forest, offering solid options for mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing when winter blankets the hills.
Hunting is permitted in season, and the mix of hardwood and conifer forest supports healthy populations of deer and turkey. Anglers will find native brook trout in the cold, clean streams that thread through the property.
The best window for visiting runs from late May through mid-October, with fall foliage peaking in the second and third weeks of October at this elevation. Summer brings warm days but refreshingly cool mornings in the gorge.
Come prepared for uneven terrain and limited cell service — this is a forest that rewards self-sufficiency and rewards it generously with genuine solitude just two hours from Boston.
