Wills Mountain State Park

Rising sharply above the city of Cumberland in Allegany County, Wills Mountain State Park protects 470 acres of rugged Appalachian ridgeline that defines western Maryland’s skyline. The park’s namesake mountain forms a dramatic eastern wall along the Narrows — a striking water gap where Wills Creek carved through the ridge, creating one of the most recognizable geological features in the region.

What makes Wills Mountain worth the visit is the elevation. Trails climb through mixed hardwood forests of oak, hickory, and maple to rocky overlooks that reward hikers with sweeping views of Cumberland, the Allegheny Plateau, and the surrounding folded ridges of the Ridge and Valley Province. The exposed sandstone outcrops along the summit ridge are a favorite among rock scramblers and photographers alike.

Outdoor activities center on hiking and nature observation. The forested slopes support healthy populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and black bear, making it a solid spot for wildlife watching, particularly during early morning hours. Birdwatchers will find the ridgeline productive during fall raptor migration. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during season.
