The Western Maryland Rail Trail follows the path of the former Western Maryland Railway through the scenic Potomac River valley in Allegany and Washington counties. This paved, multi-use trail stretches roughly 28 miles from Fort Frederick State Park near Big Pool to the outskirts of Cumberland, tracing the C&O Canal Towpath’s north bank companion route through some of Maryland’s most striking western landscapes.

What sets this trail apart is its smooth, fully paved surface — a rarity among rail trails in the region — making it accessible to road cyclists, inline skaters, wheelchair users, and families with strollers alongside the usual hikers and joggers. The trail runs parallel to the C&O Canal Towpath for much of its length, so visitors can loop out on pavement and return on crushed limestone for variety.

The corridor cuts through forested hillsides, passes old railway tunnels, and offers frequent views of the Potomac River and the ridges of Appalachian Maryland. Wildlife sightings are common — great blue herons, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys are regulars along quieter stretches. Several trailheads provide parking and restroom access at intervals along the route.

Spring and fall deliver the best conditions: mild temperatures, manageable humidity, and either wildflower blooms or peak foliage color against the river valley. Summer is popular but can be hot and exposed on the open sections.

Nearby Fort Frederick State Park and Rocky Gap State Park offer camping for those planning a multi-day visit. The trail connects to Cumberland’s downtown, where you’ll find restaurants, lodging, and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad depot.
