South Toledo Bend State Park

Tucked into the piney woods of western Louisiana near Anacoco, South Toledo Bend State Park spreads across 1,000 acres along the southern shores of Toledo Bend Reservoir — the largest man-made body of water in the South. Established in 2004, this park has quickly earned a devoted following, reflected in its strong 4.7-star rating from nearly 800 visitors.

Toledo Bend Reservoir is the main draw here, and for good reason. The lake stretches 65 miles along the Louisiana-Texas border, offering some of the best bass fishing in the country. Anglers chase largemouth, striped, and hybrid bass year-round, and the park provides a convenient boat launch for getting out on the water. Beyond fishing, the reservoir is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and swimming on hot Louisiana afternoons.

Back on land, hiking trails wind through longleaf pine and hardwood forests where you might spot white-tailed deer, wild turkey, or the occasional bald eagle. The park also features mountain biking trails, a disc golf course, and a swimming pool — a welcome bonus during the humid summer months.

The best time to visit is spring (March through May) or fall (September through November), when temperatures are comfortable and the woods are alive with color and birdsong. Summers bring heat and humidity but also the fullest lake access.
