Nolin Lake State Park sits on 333 acres along the shores of Nolin Lake in Edmonson County, just minutes from Mammoth Cave National Park — making it an ideal base camp for exploring one of Kentucky’s most famous attractions while enjoying a quieter, lake-focused experience of your own.
The park’s real draw is Nolin Lake itself, a 5,795-acre reservoir with clear water and wooded coves that attract boaters, anglers, and swimmers throughout the warm months. Fishing here is excellent, with spotted bass, largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish all well-represented. A public boat ramp provides easy lake access, and the swimming beach offers a gentle entry point for families with young kids.
Hiking trails wind through hardwood forest along the lake’s edge, and the surrounding karst landscape — the same geology that created Mammoth Cave — adds unexpected character to even short walks. Keep an eye out for sinkholes, springs, and limestone outcroppings along the way.
The campground includes both RV-friendly sites with hookups and more secluded tent sites closer to the water. Facilities are well-maintained, and the 4.6-star rating across nearly a thousand reviews reflects a park that consistently delivers a solid experience without the crowds of nearby national park campgrounds.
Late spring through early fall is prime season, with summer weekends being the busiest. September and October bring fewer visitors, cooler temperatures, and some of the best fishing of the year. If you’re planning a Mammoth Cave trip, building in an extra day here is well worth it.
