Prairie Spirit Trail State Park stretches across the heart of eastern Kansas, offering one of the state’s finest rail-trail experiences. Built along a former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway corridor, this linear park runs roughly 51 miles from Ottawa south through the Flint Hills, passing through small towns like Richmond, Garnett, and Welda along the way.

The crushed limestone trail is a favorite among cyclists, joggers, and hikers who appreciate its gentle, flat grade and wide path. Horseback riders have a dedicated parallel tread on portions of the route. In fall, the surrounding tallgrass prairie erupts in gold and amber, making it one of the most scenic stretches of trail in the Midwest. Spring wildflower displays are equally rewarding.

Birdwatchers will find plenty to observe — meadowlarks, red-tailed hawks, and the occasional greater prairie chicken frequent the adjacent grasslands. The trail crosses several creeks and passes through wooded corridors that offer welcome shade on warm days.

The park has trailheads with parking, restrooms, and water access in Ottawa and Garnett. While Prairie Spirit Trail itself doesn’t offer traditional campgrounds, nearby Eisenhower State Park on Melvern Lake and the town of Garnett provide lodging and camping options within a short drive.

Spring through fall is the ideal window, with September and October delivering the best combination of comfortable temperatures and stunning prairie color. With a 4.6-star rating from visitors, this trail consistently earns praise for its peaceful scenery and well-maintained surface.
