Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park

Rising from the flat Kansas prairie like a lost canyon, Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park protects 330 acres of stunning Niobrara chalk formations near Oakley in Logan County. Established in 2018 through a partnership between The Nature Conservancy and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, this is one of the state’s newest and most visually striking parks — and one of the best-kept secrets on the Great Plains.

The park’s namesake formations are towering chalk spires and bluffs carved over millions of years, reaching up to 100 feet tall. These ancient seabed deposits date back roughly 80 million years to the Western Interior Seaway, and fossils of marine creatures can still be spotted in the exposed rock. The landscape draws inevitable comparisons to the American Southwest, but it’s unmistakably Kansas — prairie grasses run right up to the canyon rim, and pronghorn antelope graze nearby.

Two well-maintained trails — the Life on the Rocks Trail and the Overlook Trail — guide visitors along the bluff edges with interpretive signage explaining the geology and ecology. The terrain is manageable for most fitness levels, though sturdy footwear is recommended on the chalk surfaces. Rated 4.7 out of 5 by over 500 visitors, the park consistently impresses.

Visit in spring or fall for mild temperatures and golden-hour light that turns the chalk formations amber and pink. Summer brings intense heat with little shade. Note that the park currently requires guided access during certain seasons, so check ahead before making the drive. The nearest full-service town is Oakley, about 25 miles north.
