Spread across 857 acres of rolling Chautauqua Hills terrain, the park occupies a landscape where tallgrass prairie meets Cross Timbers woodland — a transitional zone that gives it more visual variety than most eastern Kansas parks.

The reservoir is the main draw. Anglers work the coves for channel catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass, with spring and early fall producing the most consistent catches. A swim beach opens in summer, and the park’s network of hiking and mountain biking trails winds through oak-hickory forest along the bluffs above the water. The Table Mound Trail is the standout — a moderate loop with elevated views of the reservoir and surrounding hills that feels more like the Ozarks than the Kansas most people imagine.

Camping options range from full-hookup RV sites near the water to more secluded primitive spots tucked into the timber. Several utility campsites sit close enough to the shoreline that you can fish from your site at dawn without a real commute. The park also has cabins for those who prefer a roof overhead.
