Cedar Bluff State Park sits along the southern shore of Cedar Bluff Reservoir in Trego County, Kansas, offering 850 acres of rugged High Plains landscape that feels worlds apart from the flat farmland surrounding it. Established in 1962, the park draws visitors with its striking chalk bluffs, open grasslands, and the expansive reservoir that serves as the centerpiece for recreation in western Kansas.
The park is split into two distinct areas — the Bluffton Area on the south side and the Page Creek Area to the north — each with its own character. Bluffton features rocky outcrops and panoramic views of the reservoir, while Page Creek offers gentler terrain with more sheltered coves. Fishing is the main draw here, with walleye, wipers, and largemouth bass pulling anglers from across the state. Boating, swimming, and water skiing keep the reservoir busy through summer months.
On land, hiking trails wind through native grasslands where you’re likely to spot deer, wild turkey, and the occasional coyote. The wide-open skies make this one of the better stargazing spots in Kansas, far from any significant light pollution.
Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer brings peak water activity but can push past 100 degrees. Winter is quiet but rewards visitors with stark, beautiful solitude.
With a 4.6-star rating across 321 reviews, Cedar Bluff consistently earns praise from visitors who appreciate its uncrowded spaces and genuine western Kansas character. It’s a park that rewards those willing to make the drive.
