Walnut Woods State Park sits along the Raccoon River in West Des Moines, offering 250 acres of mature walnut and hardwood forest just minutes from Iowa’s capital city. That proximity is what makes it special — this is genuine woodland tucked right against the metro, a place where wild turkeys wander through old-growth walnut groves while suburban traffic hums a few miles away.
The park’s defining feature is its towering black walnut trees, some of the finest stands in the state. A network of trails winds through these woods and along the river bottoms, with about 3 miles of paths suited to hiking and cross-country skiing. The Raccoon River itself draws anglers after channel catfish, smallmouth bass, and walleye, and the riverbank stretches are particularly scenic during fall color. Birdwatchers will find woodpeckers, great horned owls, and migrating warblers throughout the canopy.
Picnic shelters, playgrounds, and an open lodge make this a reliable spot for family gatherings and group events. The park is well-maintained and rarely overcrowded despite its urban-edge location, which regulars clearly appreciate — a 4.6 rating across 772 reviews speaks to consistent quality.
Visit in mid-October for peak fall color through the walnut canopy, or come in late spring when wildflowers carpet the forest floor and the river runs full. Summer weekends bring families but never feel packed.
If you’re passing through Des Moines and want an hour or an afternoon in real Iowa woods, Walnut Woods delivers without the drive.
