Tucked into the Loess Hills of western Iowa near Moorhead, Preparation Canyon State Park is one of the state’s most dramatic and underappreciated landscapes. Spanning 344 acres in Monona County, the park protects a rugged network of deep ravines and sharp-ridged hills carved from wind-deposited loess soil — some of the thickest loess deposits found anywhere outside of China.

The park’s name traces back to a short-lived Mormon splinter colony that settled here in the 1850s before disbanding. Today, the human history has largely yielded to wildness. Unlike many Iowa state parks, Preparation Canyon feels genuinely remote. The steep, narrow canyons are blanketed in native hardwood forest, and the ridgeline trails offer sweeping views across the Missouri River valley that feel more like the Badlands than the Midwest.

Hiking is the main draw, with trails winding along canyon floors and up to exposed ridges. The terrain is moderately challenging — expect uneven footing and real elevation changes. Wildflower displays peak in spring, and fall color along the wooded ravines is outstanding. Birders will find woodland species throughout the canopy, and white-tailed deer are abundant.

There are no developed campgrounds within the park, so plan for day use. The nearest camping options are at nearby Lewis and Clark State Park on Blue Lake.

Spring through fall is the best window, with April through May and September through October offering the most comfortable temperatures and the most visual reward. Summer visits work but bring humidity and ticks — long pants and repellent are wise.
