Sielbeck Forest Natural Area

Tucked away near the small town of Belknap in Johnson County, Sielbeck Forest Natural Area offers 385 acres of quiet southern Illinois woodland that most travelers will never find on a crowded trail map. Established as a state park in 1998, this relatively young addition to Illinois’ public lands preserves a stretch of the Shawnee Hills region known for its rich hardwood forests, rocky outcrops, and seasonal wildflower displays.

The best time to visit is mid-April through May, when dogwood and redbud trees bloom across the understory, or October, when the hardwood canopy turns vivid shades of amber and crimson. Summer visits are fine but expect humidity and ticks — long pants and insect repellent are non-negotiable in southern Illinois.
