Buffalo Rock State Park & Effigy Tumuli sits on a dramatic sandstone bluff overlooking the Illinois River valley near Ottawa in LaSalle County. This 298-acre state park, established in 1928, offers something genuinely rare — one of the largest outdoor earth sculptures in the world.

The Effigy Tumuli, completed in 1985 by artist Michael Heizer, are five massive earthen mounds shaped like aquatic creatures native to the Illinois River: a water strider, frog, catfish, turtle, and snake. Built atop reclaimed strip-mine land, these sculptures transform industrial scarring into monumental land art. The turtle mound alone stretches over 2,000 feet. Viewing them from the blufftop trails gives you the full sense of their scale, though they’re best appreciated from aerial perspectives.

Beyond the art, the park delivers on classic Illinois River bluff hiking. Trails wind through wooded ravines and along cliff edges with sweeping views of the river valley — particularly stunning during fall color season from mid-October through early November. Birdwatching is excellent here, especially during spring and fall migrations when raptors ride the thermals along the bluffs. A small bison enclosure near the park entrance adds an unexpected highlight.

The park does not offer camping, but nearby Starved Rock State Park and the town of Ottawa provide plenty of lodging options within a short drive.

Spring through fall is the best window for visiting. The park is free to enter and rarely crowded, making it one of LaSalle County’s best-kept secrets for a quiet afternoon outdoors.
