Argyle Lake State Park

Tucked into the rolling hills of McDonough County near Colchester, Argyle Lake State Park spans 1,700 acres of western Illinois landscape that feels a world away from the flatlands most associate with the state. Established in 1948, the park was built around a 93-acre man-made lake created by damming Argyle Hollow, and that lake remains the heart of everything here.

Fishing draws steady visitors year-round — the lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and crappie, and a boat rental concession makes it easy to get on the water even if you didn’t bring your own. Electric motors only, so the lake stays quiet. Hikers will find roughly 10 miles of trails winding through oak-hickory forests and across creek beds, with enough elevation change to keep things interesting. The Tall Timber Trail offers the best views, especially in mid-October when the hardwoods peak.

Fall is the standout season here, but spring wildflower displays along the forest floor are worth the trip too. Summers bring swimming at the small beach area and reliable bird watching — look for great blue herons along the marshy inlets.

The park offers Class A and Class C campsites, and the wooded sites along the lake’s eastern shore are the ones to request. They fill on autumn weekends, so book ahead if you’re planning an October visit.
