American Legion State Forest
Tucked into the rolling hills of Barkhamsted in Litchfield County, American Legion State Forest spans 893 acres along the West Branch of the Farmington River — one of Connecticut’s most celebrated waterways. The forest draws a loyal following of paddlers, anglers, and hikers who appreciate its blend of river access and wooded backcountry without the crowds of nearby state parks.
The Farmington River, designated as a National Wild and Scenic River, is the undisputed centerpiece here. Fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout is excellent, particularly during spring hatches when the river draws anglers from across New England. Tubing and kayaking pick up in summer as water levels allow for easy, scenic floats through hemlock-shaded corridors.
Hikers will find several miles of trails winding through mixed hardwood forests, including a section of the blue-blazed Tunxis Trail that climbs to ridgeline views over the river valley. Mountain biking is permitted on designated routes, and cross-country skiing takes over the trails once snow arrives.
Camping is available at a riverside campground that fills up fast on summer weekends — reservations are strongly recommended. Sites sit close enough to the water that you’ll fall asleep to the sound of the river.
Visit in late September through mid-October for peak foliage that lights up the Farmington Valley in fiery color. Spring offers the best fishing and wildflower displays along the riverbanks. With a 4.3-star rating from visitors, American Legion consistently delivers a quality Connecticut outdoor experience without pretense.
