Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area sits in the San Bernardino Mountains above Hesperia, offering a striking contrast to the surrounding high desert. The 976-acre reservoir, fed by the California State Water Project, provides some of the best freshwater recreation in Southern California — a genuine oasis at 3,350 feet elevation where pine-covered hillsides meet clear blue water.

Swimming is the main draw during summer months, with a designated swim beach that draws families from across the Inland Empire. Anglers come for largemouth bass, striped bass, catfish, and trout (stocked during cooler months). The lake allows motorized boats with a launch ramp on the west end, making it popular for waterskiing and wakeboarding. Kayakers and canoeists will find calmer water in the narrower coves along the eastern shore.

On land, the park’s trail system connects to the Pacific Crest Trail and the Mojave River Forks area. The 1.5-mile Miller Canyon Trail offers manageable day hiking with views across the lake and desert below.

The park operates campgrounds with both developed and more primitive sites scattered among the oaks and junipers. Reservations are strongly recommended for weekend visits between May and September — spots fill fast.

Spring and fall deliver the best overall experience: warm enough for water activities without the peak-summer crowds. Summer weekends can see the park reach capacity by mid-morning, so arrive early. Winter brings cooler temperatures and excellent trout fishing for those willing to layer up.

With 2,201 acres of high-desert lakefront, Silverwood Lake rewards visitors who make the short drive up from the valley floor.
