Benbow State Recreation Area
Garberville, California (Humboldt County)
Nestled along the South Fork of the Eel River near Garberville, Benbow State Recreation Area offers 1,142 acres of redwood-fringed riverside beauty in southern Humboldt County. This recreation area sits at the gateway to California’s famous Lost Coast region, making it an ideal base camp for exploring one of the state’s most rugged and remote stretches of coastline.
The Eel River is the main attraction here. Each summer, a seasonal dam creates Benbow Lake, transforming the river into a calm swimming hole perfect for families, kayakers, and sunbathers. When the dam is in place (typically July through September), the lake draws locals and visitors alike for warm-water recreation that feels rare this far north on the California coast. Outside of lake season, the river corridor remains excellent for fishing — steelhead runs in winter attract serious anglers from across the state.
Hiking trails wind through groves of old-growth redwoods and mixed forest, with routes ranging from easy riverside strolls to moderate ridgeline climbs offering views across the Eel River valley. Picnicking areas along the riverbank are well-maintained and shaded.
Summer is peak season, with warm days reaching the 80s and 90s — a welcome contrast to the foggy coast just an hour west. Spring brings wildflowers and green hillsides, while fall offers golden light and thinner crowds.
The historic Benbow Inn, a Tudor-style landmark just adjacent to the park, adds an unexpected touch of elegance to this otherwise woodsy corner of Northern California. Rated 4.2 out of 5 by visitors.
