Año Nuevo State Park in Pescadero, San Mateo County, offers one of nature’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles along the California coast. This 4,209-acre park is famous worldwide as the breeding ground for northern elephant seals, where thousands of these massive marine mammals haul out on the beaches each winter to give birth, nurse their pups, and engage in dramatic mating battles.

The elephant seal colony is the park’s crown jewel. From December through March, visitors can witness 2,000-pound bulls clashing on the sand while mothers nurse their young just feet away. Guided walks during breeding season (required from December 15 to March 31) provide close encounters with these incredible animals while naturalists share insights about their biology and conservation.
