Scout Lake State Recreation Site
Sterling, Alaska (Kenai Peninsula area parks County)
Scout Lake State Recreation Site sits just off the Sterling Highway near the small community of Sterling on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula — one of the state’s most accessible yet genuinely wild corridors. The lake itself is a quiet, spring-fed body of water surrounded by spruce forest, offering a calmer alternative to the nearby Kenai River crowds.
Fishing is the main draw here. Scout Lake is stocked with rainbow trout and landlocked silver salmon, making it a reliable spot for anglers who prefer stillwater casting over battling river currents. A small boat launch accommodates canoes, kayaks, and boats with electric motors, keeping the water peaceful. In winter, the frozen lake draws ice fishers who set up alongside cross-country skiers using the surrounding trails.
The recreation site includes a day-use area with picnic shelters, grills, and a short nature trail that loops through the boreal forest — a good stretch for families with young kids. The lake is shallow enough to warm slightly by midsummer, and locals do swim here, though “warm” is relative on the Kenai Peninsula.
The best window to visit runs from late May through September, when long daylight hours and mild temperatures make the most of the outdoor space. July and August offer the warmest water and peak fishing conditions. Fall brings golden birch canopy and fewer visitors.
Scout Lake works well as a half-day stop while traveling the Sterling Highway toward Soldotna or Homer, or as a low-key basecamp for exploring the greater Kenai Peninsula.
