Snowhole Rapids Wilderness Study Area protects a rugged canyon landscape along Idaho‘s Salmon River, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The terrain drops dramatically from 3,800 feet in the Mahoney Creek drainage to 1,200 feet at the river, creating steep canyon walls and challenging backcountry conditions.

The Salmon River serves as the main attraction, offering outstanding whitewater opportunities ranging from technical rapids to calmer stretches suitable for fishing. Anglers target the river’s native species while hikers explore trails winding through the canyon terrain. Wildlife viewing and photography opportunities are excellent given the area’s remote character and diverse habitat.

Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM land, allowing visitors to establish primitive campsites away from developed facilities. Access requires planning—roads leading into the WSA can be rough and may require high-clearance vehicles. Bring all supplies, including water, as services are nonexistent within the study area.

Spring through fall provides the best conditions, with late spring offering peak river flows for rafting. Summer brings warm temperatures in the canyon bottom, while fall attracts hunters pursuing big game in the surrounding uplands.
