Zion Park Scenic Byway
Utah
The Zion Park Scenic Byway delivers one of Utah’s most dramatic driving experiences, carrying travelers through a landscape that shifts from high desert plateaus into the heart of Zion National Park’s towering sandstone canyon. As you descend toward the park, rust-red cliffs and cream-colored Navajo sandstone formations rise hundreds of feet on either side, framing views that feel almost impossibly grand.
Along the route, watch for the Checkerboard Mesa with its distinctive cross-hatched surface, the sweeping panorama at Canyon Overlook, and the narrow passage through the historic Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel — a marvel of 1930s engineering carved directly through solid rock. Emerging from the tunnel, the canyon opens to reveal the Towers of the Virgin, the Great White Throne, and the lush riparian corridor along the Virgin River.
Key stops include Springdale’s galleries and outfitters at the byway’s western end, and the park’s scenic drive into Zion Canyon itself. Allow at least two to three hours to drive the route with stops, though a full day lets you explore trailheads and viewpoints at a relaxed pace.
Spring and fall offer the best conditions — mild temperatures, manageable crowds, and golden light that sets the canyon walls aglow.
