Stop in the town of Todd to explore its old general store, or pull over at one of several river access points to wade into the cool, clear water.

The byway passes through some of the most unspoiled countryside in the southern Appalachians, with wildflower meadows in spring and a spectacular canopy of color each autumn. Fall foliage season, from late September through October, is the ideal time to drive it.
