Mount Mitchell Scenic Drive winds through the heart of North Carolina’s Black Mountains, delivering travelers to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. This state scenic byway climbs through lush hardwood forests that give way to fragrant spruce-fir stands as elevation rises, offering a dramatic shift in landscape that feels like driving from the Carolinas to Canada in a single journey.

Along the route, sweeping overlooks reveal layer upon layer of blue-hazed ridgelines stretching to the horizon. Wildflower meadows bloom trailside in spring and summer, while autumn transforms the mountainsides into a blazing tapestry of gold, crimson, and amber. At the summit, the observation platform at Mount Mitchell State Park rewards drivers with panoramic views spanning more than 70 miles on clear days.
