Nantahala Byway
North Carolina
Winding through the heart of western North Carolina’s rugged mountain country, the Nantahala Byway immerses travelers in some of the southern Appalachians’ most dramatic scenery. The route traces the Nantahala River Gorge, where sheer rock walls rise hundreds of feet above rushing whitewater, and thick forests of hemlock, rhododendron, and hardwoods press in from every side.
Highlights along the drive include the Nantahala National Forest, one of the largest tracts of public land in the eastern United States, and the Nantahala Outdoor Center, a legendary hub for whitewater rafting and kayaking. Pull over at roadside overlooks to watch kayakers navigate Class II and III rapids below, or stop to hike trails leading to cascading waterfalls hidden in moss-covered hollows. The charming mountain town of Bryson City anchors the route with local shops, craft breweries, and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.
Autumn transforms the gorge into a corridor of blazing color, making late October the premier time to drive. Spring brings wildflower blooms and roaring waterfalls fed by snowmelt. Allow two to three hours to savor the route without rushing, longer if you plan to hike, paddle, or linger over a meal in town.
