Rising above Georgia’s pristine barrier island, Sapelo Island Light has guided mariners along the state’s marshy coastline for generations. The historic tower stands as a sentinel over one of the most undeveloped islands on the Eastern Seaboard. Though no longer an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse remains a striking landmark against Sapelo’s wild landscape.

The tower is not open to public climbing, but photographers can capture dramatic shots from the surrounding grounds. Golden hour and early morning fog offer the best lighting conditions. Visitors to Sapelo Island can explore the Reynolds Mansion, the Hog Hammock community — one of the last intact Gullah-Geechee settlements — and miles of unspoiled beaches and salt marshes.
