Cedar Butte Wilderness Study Area

Idaho

Cedar Butte Wilderness Study Area encompasses nearly 36,000 acres of volcanic terrain in southeastern Idaho, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Ancient lava flows dating back over 10,000 years create a rugged landscape of basalt formations, sagebrush steppe, and scattered juniper woodlands.

Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the WSA, allowing visitors to set up camp in undeveloped areas away from roads. No designated campgrounds or facilities exist within the boundaries, so pack accordingly with all necessary water, supplies, and waste removal equipment.

Hiking trails traverse the volcanic terrain, offering routes through varied ecosystems. Horseback riding provides an excellent way to cover larger distances across the open landscape. Hunters pursue mule deer and antelope during appropriate seasons, while wildlife enthusiasts photograph sage grouse, mourning doves, and over 100 other bird species. Coyotes and rabbits are common sightings.

Access roads are typically unpaved and may require high-clearance vehicles, particularly after wet weather. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for extended backcountry trips, as summer heat can be intense across the exposed lava fields.
