Rising above the remote barrier islands of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Cape Lookout Light has guided mariners since 1812. Its striking diamond-pattern daymark — black and white checks — makes it one of the most recognizable lighthouses on the Atlantic coast. Still an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse is managed by the National Park Service as part of Cape Lookout National Seashore.

The tower is not open to public climbing. Photographers will find the best light during golden hour, when the diamond pattern contrasts dramatically against sunset skies. Spring and fall offer mild weather and fewer crowds.

Nearby, visitors can explore pristine beaches, go shelling on Shackleford Banks, and spot the famous wild Banker horses.
