Located along the James River in Virginia, the Dutch Gap Canal Lights were established in 1875 to guide vessel traffic through the narrow Dutch Gap Canal, a waterway with origins in the Civil War when Union troops began cutting a channel to bypass a Confederate stronghold. The lights marked a strategically significant passage that shortened navigation on the winding James River.

Now inactive and closed to the public, the lights cannot be climbed or accessed up close. They remain notable for their Civil War-era connection and maritime heritage. The best photography conditions are during golden hour from the riverbank. Nearby attractions include Henricus Historical Park, Dutch Gap Conservation Area, and the historic city of Richmond just upriver.
