Ridgetop Scenic Byway

Kentucky

35.5 miles

Winding through 35.5 miles of eastern Kentucky’s rugged highlands, the Ridgetop Scenic Byway traces the narrow spines of Appalachian ridgelines where the views stretch for miles across forested hollows and mist-filled valleys. This state-designated scenic byway rewards drivers with one breathtaking overlook after another as the road rises and dips along the mountaintops.

Dense hardwood forests crowd both sides of the route, erupting in spectacular color each autumn when oaks, maples, and hickories paint the ridges in crimson, amber, and gold. Spring brings waves of wildflowers — trillium, redbud, and dogwood — carpeting the understory beneath a fresh green canopy. In summer, the elevated route offers cooler temperatures and lush, almost tropical foliage.

Watch for wildlife along the way: white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and red-tailed hawks riding thermals above the valleys are common sights. Small communities along the byway offer glimpses into traditional mountain culture, with roadside churches, old homesteads, and welcoming local stops where you can stretch your legs.

Allow at least ninety minutes for the drive, longer if you plan to linger at overlooks. Mid-October delivers peak fall color, but any season along these ridgetops feels like a world apart from the everyday.
