Bill Monroe Bluegrass Trail
Kentucky
111.6 miles
Wind through the heart of Kentucky’s bluegrass country on the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Trail, a 111-mile scenic byway that celebrates the birthplace of bluegrass music and the rolling landscapes that inspired it. Named for the legendary “Father of Bluegrass,” this route carries travelers through gentle hills draped in horse pastures, tobacco fields, and wildflower meadows framed by old stone fences and weathered barns.
Along the way, stop in Rosine to visit Bill Monroe’s homestead and grave site, where musicians still gather for weekly jam sessions at the Jerusalem Ridge stage. The route passes through small towns where front-porch picking is a way of life, alongside historic covered bridges, country churches, and farmsteads that look much as they did a century ago. Watch for white-tailed deer grazing at dawn and red-tailed hawks circling above open fields.
The drive takes roughly three hours without stops, but allow a full day to explore roadside attractions, sample country cooking, and soak in the music. Late spring through early fall offers the most rewarding experience, when the hills are lush green and outdoor festivals fill the calendar. This is Kentucky at its most authentic — unhurried, melodic, and deeply rooted in tradition.
