River Bluffs Scenic Byway

Iowa

175.0 miles

Wind through some of Iowa’s most dramatic terrain along the River Bluffs Scenic Byway, a 175-mile journey tracing the bluffs and valleys of the Upper Mississippi River region. This state-designated scenic route reveals a side of Iowa that surprises first-time visitors — towering limestone bluffs, deeply carved river valleys, and sweeping panoramas that stretch for miles across the Mississippi floodplain.

Along the way, discover charming river towns where historic architecture lines quiet main streets. Pull over at scenic overlooks perched high above the water, where bald eagles soar on thermal currents below you. The route passes through Effigy Mounds National Monument, home to ancient Native American burial mounds shaped like bears and birds, and Pikes Peak State Park, offering one of Iowa’s most photographed vistas where the Wisconsin River meets the Mississippi.

Wildflower-dotted prairies, dense hardwood forests, and winding creek hollows keep the scenery constantly changing. Watch for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and great blue herons along quieter stretches.

The best time to drive is mid-September through late October, when fall foliage sets the bluffs ablaze in crimson and gold. Allow a full day to savor the stops, or spread it across a leisurely weekend.
