Red Sands Off-Highway Vehicle Area offers over 100 miles of user-developed trails winding through mesquite coppice dunes in southern New Mexico. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this OHV destination features sand dunes ranging from one to several meters in height, creating varied terrain for dirt bikes, ATVs, and other off-road vehicles.

Riders can follow established trails or travel cross-country throughout the area. The BLM typically authorizes one organized motorcycle race annually, usually held in February, but the trails remain open to recreational users year-round.

Dispersed camping is permitted within the OHV area, allowing visitors to set up camp near their riding spots. No developed campground facilities exist on-site, so visitors should arrive prepared with water, supplies, and waste disposal plans. The desert environment means hot summers and mild winters, making fall through spring the most comfortable seasons for extended stays.

Access roads are typically suitable for vehicles towing trailers, though conditions can change after storms. Check current BLM advisories before your trip, particularly during monsoon season when flash flooding may affect road conditions.
